Unknown Brother, Constructing the Temple Within - A Handbook

Freemasonry is a peculiar system, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. But what does this mean?  The actual answer will unfold gradually through self-effort over months and years. We employ symbols, allegories and a speculative style intentionally to stimulate deeper reflection and awaken inner awareness. As the foundation for Masonic knowledge is built precept upon precept hereafter, these symbols and lessons will gain further light through the coming Degrees. Absorb, reflect, question and discuss aspects that seem cloudy rather than seek definitive answers right away.

We invite you to explore themes and symbolism presented in the First Degree, and as an Entered Apprentice, you will begin learning the “language” of our Order - which holds the keys for unlocking its secrets.

The enclosed questions will reinforce and examine your understanding of the essential rituals, symbols, principles and functions of Freemasonry at this preliminary stage. Feel free to add your own notes alongside them.

The mission of this handbook is to edify and orient new Members to the workings of the Craft. While Ceremonies and rituals enacted within our Lodges follow an established format, the individual growth experience remains unique to each Brother.
